To mark the day in Ireland, hundreds of people showed their support by participating in a series of fundraising pop-up yoga events organised by Midsummer Yoga for Palestine in Dublin, Limerick, Galway, Nenagh, Newbridge, Bantry, Ennis and Drogheda. People of all ages and levels of experience rolled out their yoga mats throughout Ireland raising over €1,500 for Farashe Yoga, a non-profit Yoga centre based in the West Bank city of Ramallah. Proceeds will go towards providing yoga teacher training, materials and outreach projects in the Palestinian West Bank.  “These events were inspired by a group of Palestinian women who are using yoga as a way to seek respite from the everyday stresses and trauma of living under Military Occupation. The support shown on UN International Yoga Day has been unprecedented, with one venue raising a phenomenal €400″, says Muireann de Barra, Limerick-based organizer.  All events were hosted with the generous support of Yoga teachers and studios around the country and were offered on a donation basis. Thanks to all of the following hosts and supporters for your generosity and solidarity:

Irish yoga community to support yoga projects in Palestine on UN International Day of Yoga 2015

Midsummer Yoga for Palestine‘ marks UN International Yoga Day on June 21st 2015 around Ireland and invites Yoga teachers, practitioners, and community groups to organize a special yoga event in their local area to show solidarity and raise funds for yoga projects in the Palestinian West Bank.

Proceeds from the events will go to Farashe Yoga – a non-profit yoga centre based in Ramallah, in the Occupied Palestinian West Bank. Since 2012, Farashe has offered a unique yoga teacher-training programme for local Palestinian women so they can bring the benefits of yoga to their local communities and refugee camps in the West Bank. This work is 100% run by volunteers and donations and has been hugely successful to date with over 25 women trained as foundation yoga teachers. As a result, yoga has been introduced to children in schools, the disabled, elderly and Palestinian men. The benefits have been far-reaching, offering both vital physical and psychological relief to women, children and men from the ongoing effects of life under illegal military occupation. The aim of ‘Midsummer Yoga for Palestine‘ is to support the ongoing work of Farashe so they can continue the training and outreach projects in the Occupied West Bank.  Midsummer Yoga for Palestine is inspired by the Palestinian women featured in the radio documentary, ‘Freedom On the Mat‘ made by Muireann de Barra (See:

Events can range from classes-by-donation, laughter yoga, acro-yoga to challenges like the traditional ‘108 Sun salutations’ which is practiced on the Solstice. Midsummer Yoga for Palestine can also be supported by making a donation without any participation necessary  (Details coming soon)
